Web Comics

I want to start this entry with a nod to the now sadly-defunct MAJOR SPOILERS website, which closed shop on Halloween. Thanks to Stephen Schleicher for all his efforts there. I will miss MS, as it was not only a great way to get a sense of what was going on in some of the major comics of our day, but Stephen's reviews often helped me form an opinion about which trade paperbacks are required reading, and which I could safely pass.


And also, thanks for the Daylight Savings Time reminder, Stephen!! The art's easily recognizable as classic Aparo, but in what issue might we find this??


MS was just one of my favorite stops on the internet connected to the world of comic books and superheroes, however. I thought I take the sting out as we struggle for meaning in this post-Major Spoilers cyberworld, I'd share a few recommendations (all links in Explore Your Multiverse in the left column!) of things I've recently discovered, starting with Diesel Sweeties by R. Stevens.

Isn't it great to see some serious fun poked at all the comic book death?

The Rack by Kevin Church and Benjamin Birdie is an excellent webcomic which has been cracking me up lately, with its take on the world of comic book sales and fandom.


Another great discovery has been Brad Guigar's Evil Inc. Here's Lightning Lady, who works as the receptionist at this supervillian super-company. We love her!

DC Comics has recently launched their online arm, Zuda Comics, and there are a few intriguing webcomics worth taking a look at there, as well!

I'm always interested in trying something new, so please let me know if there's a webcomic you've discovered recently that I haven't mentioned and I'll be glad to check it out.

Ah, how I love to see the old Jim Aparo art again!

Is it me, or does Diana look particularly heartbroken at Batman's announcement?



A little compare and contrast exercise: Batman and the Outsiders, November 2007.

So let's see: Black Lightning's graduated to the JLA, but his daughter (Storm?) is on the team. Her main squeeze Grace is there, and I couldn't be happier to have heard that she's "of the Amazons". (Clark has superfriends, family and pets, Bruce has Bat-Everyone...it's nice to see Diana growing a little more of a "family" beyond the Wonder Girls.)

From the original team, we have Katana and Metamorpho (yay and double-yay), but also GeoForce (meh, not so much...). Green Arrow's a good fit for the team, and its always interesting to see Ollie and Bruce playing off one another.

Speaking of Batpeople, the latest Batgirl's on this team, too! Not to mention the undercover (unpictured) Martian Manhunter and Catwoman. All in all, sounds very interesting.
